Sometimes You Just Need to Finish Something

Anyone who takes on ambitious projects knows how this goes. You start with one clear goal, and somewhere along the way it splits into three. Then each of those splits again. Suddenly you’re not building a bumper, you’re reverse engineering a duct, which means scanning a part, which means learning surface modelling properly, which means the actual bumper is still six steps away and you haven’t touched it in weeks.
None of those steps are wrong. They’re often necessary. But put together, they wear you down. You start to feel like you’re always mid-project and never at the finish line, and that feeling is corrosive in a way that has nothing to do with how good the work actually is.
I’ve hit that wall many times. Being in the middle of a few different things running at once, moulds, CAD, the usual. And what pulled me out of it wasn’t finishing one of the big projects. It was printing a plastic pipe.

I converted my own car from the stock Lucas EFI system to Trionic 5 back in 2015. Even then I knew the mass airflow meter housing was just dead weight once the conversion was done, a solid aluminum pipe with some electronics doing nothing anymore. I wanted to replace it almost immediately. But in 2015 I didn’t know the first thing about 3D printing. So it sat on a mental list for the better part of a decade.
This year I’m converting the car again, from Trionic to Haltech, and that gave me a second chance at the same idea. Except this time I actually own a 3D printer, and I know how to use it.

One evening, instead of picking away at something with five more steps between me and done, I opened Fusion 360, measured the original part with calipers, modelled it, and sent it to the printer. A few hours later I had a finished part in my hand. Not a prototype waiting on a mould. But a real, usable thing, done. Something I’d wanted to build for ten years, finished in an evening.
It weighed 150 grams against the original’s nearly a kilogram, and it worked first try. But honestly, the weight saving wasn’t even the best part. The best part was closing a loop I’d opened in 2015.
Why This Felt Bigger Than It Should Have
Composite work, by its nature, doesn’t give you many moments like that. You design, you make the tool, you plan and calculate the laminate and wait something to cure. A job can pass through many long stages before you get to hold the thing you actually set out to make. That’s just the reality of the process, and most of the time it’s a reality worth accepting for what the process gives you in return.
But it does mean you can spend a long time working without ever getting that simple satisfaction of being able to point at something and say: that’s done.
You’re mid-pattern, mid-mould, mid-cure. Waiting for material. Waiting for a result.
The work is real, but when the finish line keeps moving, it can start to feel like you’re not getting anywhere. And that feeling wears on you regardless of how much actual progress is happening underneath it.
The little printed pipe didn’t change any of that.
The big projects were still there. The moulds still needed finishing. The CAD still needed work. Nothing became easier because I’d spent an evening making an intake pipe.
What changed was much simpler. I had finished something.
And after spending so much time surrounded by unfinished things, that was surprisingly valuable.

The Value of a Small Win
3D printing is one of the few tools in my shop that can take me from idea to finished object in a single sitting. No mould, no tooling, no waiting on anything except the print time itself.
That makes it particularly useful when a bigger project has become tangled in its own complexity.
You can step away from the thing that’s going to take another six weeks and make something that takes an evening. Not because the smaller thing is more important, and not because the big project should be abandoned, but because sometimes you need the reminder that the process can still end.
Not every part deserves to be 3D printed. Not every job should be rushed. And finishing something small doesn’t magically make a complicated project move faster.
But I think every long project benefits from occasionally being interrupted by something you can actually complete.
There’s something useful about seeing a problem, making a thing, testing it, and putting it into service before the day is over. Especially when you’ve spent months surrounded by projects that still have another ten steps to go.
